Thematic Portals

Grigoryevskoye Gorge (Kyrgyz: Chon-Ak-Suu) is a picturesque mountain gorge on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, in Issyk-Kul Region of Kyrgyzstan. The gorge lies in the Kungey Ala-Too range, near the village of Grigoryevka, from which its Russian-language name comes. In tourist materials it also appears as Grigoryevka, Grigoriev Gorge, Grigorievskoe Gorge or Chong-Ak-Suu Gorge.[1][2]

Grigoryevskoye Gorge is one of the most visited natural sites on the northern side of Issyk-Kul. It is known for forested slopes, a mountain river, small lakes, summer pastures, yurts in the tourist season and the possibility of combining the trip with the neighbouring Semenovskoye Gorge.[3]

Geography

Grigoryevskoye Gorge is located in the northern part of the Issyk-Kul basin, north of the Balykchy-Karakol road and the village of Grigoryevka. The valley runs into the Kungey Ala-Too range for about 30-35 km. The Chon-Ak-Suu River flows through the gorge; the name is often translated from Kyrgyz as “big white water”.[4]

In its lower part the gorge is relatively wide and accessible, with forested areas and a road along the river. Higher up the valley becomes more mountainous: pastures, side slopes, open views, lakes and routes to passes appear. Unlike many steeper gorges, Grigoryevskoye feels soft and elongated, which makes it convenient for vehicle excursions, walks and short treks.

One of the features of the route is the possibility of connecting Grigoryevskoye Gorge with Semenovskoye Gorge through a mountain section. This combination is popular among tourists in off-road vehicles, cyclists and active-route enthusiasts, but its condition depends on the season, weather and road passability.[1][3]

Nature

Grigoryevskoye Gorge

The nature of the gorge combines coniferous forests, a mountain river, meadows, stony slopes and open high-mountain areas. The slopes in the lower and middle parts are covered with Tien Shan spruce, shrubs and grassy vegetation. Because of this, Grigoryevskoye Gorge looks greener and more forested than many dry sections of the northern shore of Issyk-Kul.[1]

In summer, yurt camps operate in the valley, pastures and horses are common, and the route becomes popular for picnics and walks. In spring and early summer, the river and streams carry more water, and the waterfall and lakes look especially expressive. In autumn the gorge becomes quieter and gains stronger colour contrasts.

In the upper part, forest gradually gives way to high-mountain meadows. Above the lakes and pastures, views open toward rougher sections of the Kungey Ala-Too, and in good weather some points along the route allow views of Issyk-Kul.

Lakes and waterfall

Three small mountain lakes are usually distinguished in the valley of Grigoryevskoye Gorge: the lower, middle and upper lakes. The first lake is in the more accessible part of the gorge; the middle one is near the At-Jailoo pastures, and the upper lake lies higher and requires more time by road or on foot.[1][4]

The lakes differ in size, surroundings and accessibility. The lower sections are more often visited during an ordinary excursion, while the upper part of the valley is better suited to those ready to drive a dirt road or continue on foot. Around the lakes and pastures, it is important to treat the shores carefully, avoid littering and not drive into vulnerable wet areas.

A small cascade waterfall is located along the route through the gorge and is often included in a sightseeing trip. After rain and during active snowmelt, paths and approaches to the water can be slippery.

Route and visiting

The entrance to the gorge is near the village of Grigoryevka on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul. It is convenient to visit from Cholpon-Ata as a one-day excursion, and from Karakol or Bishkek the gorge can be included in a route around the lake. The turn into the gorge is on the Balykchy-Karakol road.[1]

A dirt road runs through the valley. In dry weather, the lower and middle parts are usually accessible for ordinary vehicles, but for travelling deeper to the lakes, passes and the connection with Semenovskoye Gorge, an off-road vehicle is preferable. After rain the road can become muddy, and some sections may be difficult for passenger cars.

Popular visit formats include:

  • a short vehicle excursion through the lower part of the gorge;
  • a walk to the river, waterfall and nearest lakes;
  • a picnic or rest in the yurt area in summer;
  • a drive through Grigoryevskoye and Semenovskoye gorges;
  • horse rides and short treks along side trails.

Practical information

Grigoryevskoye Gorge often seems like an easy route, but it is still mountain terrain. The weather can change quickly, especially closer to the upper part of the valley. Even in summer, it is worth taking warm clothing, water, comfortable shoes and sun protection.

During the tourist season, yurts, food points and horse-riding offers may operate in the lower and middle parts of the gorge. Their availability depends on the season and the specific year, so current information should be checked locally or with local organisers.

If the goal is to reach the lakes or pass through to Semenovskoye Gorge, the road condition should be assessed in advance. A few hours are enough for a calm excursion, but for a trip with stops at the lakes, walks and photography, it is better to set aside almost a full day.

Interesting facts

  • The Kyrgyz name of the gorge is Chon-Ak-Suu, meaning “big white water”.

  • The valley contains three small mountain lakes at different elevations.
  • In summer, yurt camps and pastures can be seen in the gorge.
  • Thanks to forested slopes and a relatively accessible road, the gorge is considered one of the most convenient natural routes on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Author's note

Grigoryevskoye Gorge is one of the places on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul that can be visited without difficult preparation. In one trip, travellers can see forest, a mountain river, lakes, pastures and high-mountain views. It feels softer and more excursion-oriented than many routes of the Terskey Ala-Too, and that is exactly what makes it convenient.

For a calm walk, it is enough to drive through the lower part of the gorge and stop at scenic points. If the goal is the lakes or the passage toward Semenovskoye Gorge, it is better to choose suitable weather, allow more time and take the dirt road condition into account. In any case, warm clothing is useful: even in summer the weather in the mountains can quickly become cool and rainy.
