Lake Ala-Kul

Lake Ala-Kul (also written Ala-Köl or Alakul) is a high-altitude glacial lake in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, in the Terskey Ala-Too range near the city of Karakol. The name is usually interpreted as “variegated lake” or “multicolored lake”, because the color of the water changes depending on the light, weather and the surrounding snowy and rocky slopes.[1][2]
The lake is one of the best-known natural sights around Karakol. It is visited on trekking routes linking the Karakol Gorge, the Altyn-Arashan Gorge and the Ala-Kul Pass. Because of the altitude, rapid weather changes and rocky trails, the route is physically demanding and requires proper preparation.
Geography
Lake Ala-Kul lies in the eastern part of the Terskey Ala-Too range, between the Karakol and Altyn-Arashan gorges. It occupies a high-mountain glacial basin at an elevation of about 3532 m above sea level.[2][3]
The lake is of glacial origin. Its water is fed by melting snow and glaciers, which is why it remains very cold even in summer. According to tourist and reference descriptions, the lake covers less than 1.5 km², is more than 70 m deep, is about 2.3 km long and up to 700 m wide, with a shoreline of about 7 km.[1][2]
The shores are rocky and in places steep. In clear weather, the water appears bright turquoise, but its color can change quickly: in cloudy conditions it becomes darker or gray, while low sunlight can bring out blue, violet and golden tones.[1]
Climate
The area around the lake belongs to the high-mountain zone of the Terskey Ala-Too. The weather is changeable: even during the summer months, cold wind, rain, hail or snow are possible. The lake usually freezes in the second half of autumn and thaws in spring or early summer.[1]
Acclimatization and warm equipment are important for the hike to Ala-Kul. There is no usual urban infrastructure on the route, and mobile coverage near the lake may be limited or absent.[3]
Tourism
Lake Ala-Kul is one of the main trekking destinations around Karakol. The classic route usually connects the Karakol Gorge, Lake Ala-Kul, the Ala-Kul Pass and the Altyn-Arashan Gorge, which is known for its hot springs. Such a hike most often takes two or three days, although well-prepared hikers and local guides sometimes organize one-day trips to the lake.[4][3]
The most convenient trekking season is summer and early autumn. Guides usually indicate the period from June or July to September, when the trails are more free of snow and the weather is relatively more stable.[3][4] At the beginning of the season, snowfields may remain on the pass and near the lake; after rain or snowfall, rocky sections become more difficult.
The lake can be approached from the Karakol Gorge or from Altyn-Arashan. The route follows mountain paths, scree slopes and sections with a significant elevation gain. For an independent hike, travelers need navigation, warm clothing, protection from rain and sun, trekking boots, a first-aid kit, enough food and an understanding of mountain risks. Without experience, it is better to go with a local guide or as part of an organized group.
Practical tips
Before the trip, several features should be taken into account:
- the lake is located above 3500 m, so symptoms of altitude sickness may occur;
- the weather can change quickly even on a sunny day;
- swimming is only advisable for well-prepared people, as the water is very cold;
- there are no shops or permanent cafes near the lake;
- all waste should be carried back out;
- the route should be planned with extra time, especially if camping overnight.
For most travelers, Karakol is the most convenient base. There one can find transport to the start of the route, local guides, horse services, trekking gear rental and accommodation before or after the hike.
