Kel-Suu Lake
Kel-Suu is a high-altitude lake located in the At-Bashy district of the Naryn region in southeastern Kyrgyzstan. It is a unique glacial lake.
Geography of the Lake
Kel-Suu Lake is situated at an altitude of 3,514 meters above sea level in the Kakshaal-Too mountain range, in the central Tian Shan.
The shoreline is about 13 km long, but its length varies depending on the season and the water level. The lake is 5 kilometers long, and its width ranges from 500 to 600 meters. The depth of the lake is only 5-10 meters.
Climate
Located in a high-altitude remote area, Kel-Suu Lake is influenced by a harsh mountain climate. Even in summer, the water temperature remains around 8-10°C.
Tourist Route
Visitors should be aware of the accessibility of Kel-Suu Lake, as it is located in a border zone with China. Travelers must pass through two border checkpoints and obtain the necessary permit.
Traveling by car directly to the lake is possible with an off-road vehicle, or visitors can leave their transport at the beginning of the valley and reach the lake on foot or horseback.
At the lake, visitors can take a boat ride deep into the lake for almost 9 km, enhancing their experience of the stunning mountain and lake scenery.
Interesting Facts
- Kel-Suu Lake has a unique feature — periodic disappearance of its water. The water can completely drain into underground cracks and caves, creating a surreal landscape with massive rock formations. This phenomenon is linked to the seasonal melting of glaciers. The highest water levels occur in July and August.
